ATTENTION!!

Please note that there ARE BEARS in the area. Several have been spotted on various mountains, so please do NOT LEAVE FOOD unattended. Garbage cans are a huge draw for them also.

Please be aware that they are around and may show up around your cabin at any time.

If you have a surprise encounter with a black bear:

REMAIN CALM. The bear is usually just as surprised as you and will normally leave the area.

Stand where you are or back away slowly.

NEVER RUN FROM A BEAR and do not try to climb a tree to escape! Bears may chase you.

If the bear does not leave, REMAIN CALM. Black bears are generally timid so shouting, clapping, and making noise will generally be enough to deter an approach.

If the bear persists or follows you, aggressively defend yourself. Raising your arms may help you appear larger to the bear.

DO NOT FEED THE BEARS UNDER ANY CONDITIONS!

Do not leave food or garbage outside the cabin.

If a bear does get into your food, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DRIVE IT AWAY.

Bears can aggressively defend their food sources. Back away and call the posted emergency number.

LADYBUGS ARE EVERYWHERE!

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

“Tis the season!” Ladybugs are looking for a place to hibernate. Questions? Here are some answers.

Q. Are all ladybugs girls?

A. No. There are boy ladybugs and girl ladybugs. It’s almost impossible for the average person to tell them apart.

Q. What are the boy ladybugs called?

A. Boy ladybugs are called ladybugs, too

Ladybugs release pheromones, it is sort of like “perfume” to attract other ladybugs. They use this during mating and hibernation. It helps ladybugs find each other and lets future generations know of a good place to camp out for the winter. The pheromones do not go away easily because you can’t see them. Scrubbing Pheromones off a house is a BIG task. The yellow stuff you might see from time to time is their blood. It, too, contains Pheromones and it stains. You can see the yellow blood when you hold a ladybug and it gets scared. Releasing some of its blood is one way the ladybug can protect itself. The blood smells bad and signals to a predator or enemy that this ladybug is not a good lunch choice.

Q. Do the spots tell you how old the ladybugs are?

A. No. Different Ladybugs have different numbers of spots. Some have no spots while some have as many as twenty-four. Ladybugs generally complete their life cycle within one year. The spots are with them all their life. They do not get . more spots as they get older, nor do they lose spots.

Q. Why do ladybugs come into my house in the winter tine?

A. Ladybugs are attracted to the light colored houses. Especially, older homes that are not insulated well. They come in through small cracks around windows, door
ways and under clap boards. They want to hibernate in a warm, comfortable spot
over the cold months of winter. Ladybugs gather in groups when they hibernate,
so if you see one, you can be sure more will follow. And, future generations will
be back year after year. The best way to keep them out is to repair damaged clapboards, window and door trim and caulk small cracks.

Q. Once the ladybugs are in my house, will they eat anything?

A.  No. Ladybugs don’t eat fabric, plants, paper or any other household items. They like to eat APHIDS.

Aphids are very small, but very destructive pests that feed on plants. (If you have rose bushes, you have probably seen aphids) Ladybugs, while trying to hibernate in your house, will live off of their own body fats. They, also, prefer a little humidity. Our homes, however, are usually not very humid during the winter. In fact, they are rather dry causing most of your ladybug guests to die from dehydration. Occasionally, you might witness a ladybug in your bathroom getting a drink of water. Now, that is a smart ladybug!
